Duties of Survey Engineer
A survey engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and analyzing surveys to gather data about the earth's surface and subsurface. They use a variety of tools and techniques to collect data, including GPS, total stations, and lidar. Their work can be divided into three main categories:
Geodetic Surveying: This type of surveying is used to measure large distances and angles to establish the shape and size of the earth. Survey engineers use geodetic surveying to create maps, establish property boundaries, and monitor land movement.
Engineering Surveying: This type of surveying is used to gather data for construction and engineering projects. Survey engineers use engineering surveying to create topographical maps, establish construction lines, and measure volume and area.
Hydrographic Surveying: This type of surveying is used to gather data about water bodies, such as lakes, rivers, and oceans. Survey engineers use hydrographic surveying to create nautical charts, measure water depth and currents, and monitor coastal erosion.
Survey Engineers use the data collected to produce maps, plans, and technical reports, which are used by architects, engineers, construction managers, and other professionals. They also have to be knowledgeable in the use of technology and software such as AutoCAD, GIS, and 3D modeling software to produce accurate and precise outputs.
